FIXER UPPER | TWO YEARS LATER
As I sit here writing this blog post looking out on the near 1/2 acre garden that James has been busy working away at for the last two weeks, it’s hard to believe that it is two years ago today that James and I along with our 3 dogs moved into our ‘Fixer Upper’ all I can say is what a transformation has happened in the last two years. The house is no longer resembles its former self, even though part of it is still hiding underneath the Cedral cladding!
When I think back on today two years ago with half of our personal possessions in storage and way too much at the house because the movers messed up! The first we knew that we were in for a lot of cold showers was when we came to have a shower much later in the day when a plumber confirmed that the water heater would never work and the oil heating was all but dead!
I think if had not been for the excitement and adrenaline of what we were going to turn a very rundown, unloved and dirty house into we probably would have both cried! We had left a 6 bedroomed house with 4 bathrooms that did not need a thing doing to it, to live in a renovation zone for at least the next 6 months!
We had been working with our architect John Harmer of JPD Architecture for about 3 months and had already submitted our plans prior to even exchanging contracts, so we knew what we were going to build, but it was a massive risk that had it all fallen through then we would have lost all the fees that we had paid and there was no guarantee that we would be able to use the plans elsewhere!
When I think about what we did, I would do it all again, however I know that we would not live in the project next time, however I would not change the super quick time scale that we worked to and could not imagine what it would have been like if we had taken years to start and complete.
